Gerhard Richter (German, b. 1932)
KERZE, 1988
Offset printing
Never limiting himself stylistically, or in subject matter, Gerhard
Richter's work has become known as "characteristically
contradictory." He has painted abstractly and realistically, expressively
and romantically, and has used as subject matter landscapes, figures,
found photographs, and house paint samples. In KERZE (Candle), the
artist's romantic side emerges as he deals with issues of transience
and instability. Richter has had major retrospectives in the Städtische
Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago,
and the Tate Gallery, London.
