Peter Halley

American, born 1953

In Peter Halley’s geometric paintings, squares become metaphors for cells and vertical lines become prison bars, denying traditional conceptions of beauty and referring to commercial packaging and television. Viewing a Halley painting is like visiting a museum of the essential components of our contemporary culture. Halley has exhibited widely, most notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York City and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
