Maya Lin is a world famous artist most well known for her design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982. The unexpected and innovative design became an eloquent testimony to the tragedy of war. Like the memorial, "Phases of the Moon" seems to cast a spell on its viewers through the simplicity of its geometric form. This abstractness allows viewers to make their own associations. The reflective quality of the wax also draws viewers into the moon's glow. As in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lin's work demonstrates perfect consonance between form and idea.
